The idea of snaring rats is fairly unknown to a lot of people so we've prepared a bit of background information. Snaring rats is a very effective way to control their numbers. It is a well known fact that rats are neophobic, that is to say they have a fear of, or distrust of anything new. So when a trap is introduced into their environment, they will often avoid it, young rats may well fall prey very quickly, but thereafter the rest are difficult to catch. This is especially true using steel spring traps. Many numbers can be taken initially (usually immature rats), but soon they become aware that the 'box' in the corner means death. With snares this is not the case. Snares set in the same location often produce catch after catch, rats have poor eyesight and this may contribute to their inability to detect snares. There are many advantages to snaring. Where it is impossible or inadvisable to use rodenticides, where traps may be interfered with or when rats have become accustomed to them and they no longer catch. Rat snares are cheap and disposable, they don't rust, and there is no mess. Our tealers are multi use, but we do recommend using each snare only once when a catch is made, simply hold the snare over a bucket and snip it off the tealer or trigger, this way you avoid touching the dead rodent altogether. Of course you can also use our rat snares on whips placed over rat runs.
Picture by Johnny A word of caution:- Do not handle dead vermin without protective gloves, any rat found alive in a snare should be dealt a blow to the head to dispatch it cleanly and quickly using a long stick or other suitable weapon. Do not handle any equipment without gloves that may have come into contact with rat urine or feces. If bitten or scratched seek medical attention immediately. Weils disease can be fatal. |
